The importance of your resume

Your first opportunity to impress a prospective employer.

You have heard the expression "first impressions count." Your resume is the first meeting between you, and a prospective employer more often now than ever. Companies do not have the time to interview every applicant that is interested in the job. They use an eliminating process; therefore your resume must be impressive.

Resumes tell an employer a great deal about you. Where you have been, where you are and where you are heading. However, this must be told quickly and precisely. You only have a few moments to convince the employer that your resume deserves further attention. Your resume needs to scream professionalism.

The purpose of the resume is to get the interview. Your resume is your marketing material, if properly prepared. If not, it could be responsible for you missing that vital job opportunity. Use it to your advantage. You have complete control over what a potential employer knows about you. Never falsify information, but highlight your strengths, and emphasis the positive in any weaknesses. Make sure your lasting impression is a profound and positive one.

The Importance of Preparing for the Interview

  1. Research should always be your first step.
Gathering background information on employers is a crucial element in successful interview preparation. You will need to be prepared to answer the questions "What do you know about our company"? and "Why do you want to work here?" Knowing as much as possible about the company's past performance and future plans can make your interview more interactive and could be just the leg up you need in a competitive job market. Before the interview review the company's web site and don't be afraid to contact your prospective employer to request details on the position you are interviewing for or to ask for company literature.
  2. Dress to impress - This is your employer's first impression of you so make it count!
  3. Prepare by looking at lists of commonly asked questions, or get someone to mock test you.
  4. Consider investing in a guide that explains the theory of interview questions and what each one is trying to uncover from you.
  5. Get over your fear - Interviews are, for most people, uncomfortable. There exist many great websites which contain sufficient information on how to handle an interview. The best way to do well is to understand what the interviewer wants from you.

During the interview ask yourself, what is the purpose of each question? What are these questions trying to get from you?
